Major General Ibrahim Jaber, Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Transitional Military Council, met at the Presidential Palace today with Dr. Babiker Osman Mohamed Ali, acting Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, in charge of the Biosafety and Economic Security Council.
Dr. Babiker explained in a press statement that the meeting discussed the issue of freezing the decision issued by the military council to eradicate the areas planted with the cultivar of cotton (RR), the genetically modified and not authorized in the country.
The Minister announced the issuance of a directive to freeze the implementation of the decision this season in order to take into account the public interest and to preserve the rights of farmers, noting that there are areas that have been planted and reached advanced stages in the establishment, and considered that the freeze decision does not prejudice the technical and scientific opinion. He pointed out that an integrated technical committee will be formed to study this issue and issue a decision.
For his part, Abu Bakr Ibrahim Mohamed Hassan, Chairman of the Biosafety Council, said that freezing paragraph 1 / a of the resolution on the immediate eradication of cultivated areas is in the interest of producers, noting that the coming period will witness the preparation of a comprehensive study on genetically modified cotton in general, to decide.
